Aer Lingus Must End Fuel Surcharge Rip-Off as Oil Falls 70%

RYANAIR RELEASES 1 MILLION €10 SEATS
FOR TRAVEL IN DEC, JAN & FEB - NO FUEL SURCHARGE GUARANTEED

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, today (25th Nov) called on high fare airline Aer Lingus to scrap its unfair and unjustified fuel surcharges as oil prices have fallen by over 70% to under $47 per barrel, which is $4 below the $51 level at which Aer Lingus introduced its first fuel surcharge in April 2006. Ryanair regrets that Aer Lingus continues to scam its passengers for fuel surcharges which reflect oil prices of $126 a barrel, when oil prices are now $47 a barrel.

Ryanair pointed out that passengers are deserting high fare, high fuel surcharging, airlines like Aer Lingus in favour of Ryanair’s guaranteed lowest fares and no fuel surcharge flights instead. Ryanair’s October traffic figures showed traffic growing 18% to 5.35m passengers. Aer Lingus latest figures showed their long haul traffic collapsing by 11% because their fuel surcharge rip-off is turning away long haul passengers.

Ryanair’s table below shows that when oil prices were last under $50 a barrel, Aer Lingus had no fuel surcharge whatsoever but Aer Lingus is still charging a fuel surcharge but is charging a €99 (one way!) surcharge today despite the fact that oil prices have fallen by almost 70%.

Speaking today, Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said:

“We call on Aer Lingus, the high fares, fuel surcharging airline to end its fuel surcharge rip-off and remove its fuel surcharge to reflect the fall in oil price to less than $50 per barrel. There is no excuse for Aer Lingus ripping off its passengers with unjustified fuel surcharges when oil prices have fallen by 70%. We call on the National Consumer Agency to review the Aer Lingus fuel surcharge as part of its investigation into fuel prices and highlight just how much Aer Lingus is overcharging its passengers.

Ryanair is the only airline where passengers can be guaranteed the lowest fares and no fuel surcharge. To celebrate the fall in oil prices and the fact that Ryanair guarantees no fuel surcharges we are releasing 1 million €10 seats for travel in December, January and February. These €10 seats, which are just one tenth of the cost of Aer Lingus’s fuel surcharge, are available for booking before midnight Sunday 30th November at http://www.ryanair.com. As demand for these free seats will be enormous, we urge passengers to log on immediately and secure their €10 seat.”
